Tantalite is the name assigned to a group of related minerals containing oxygen, tantalum, and a metal such as Manganese or Iron. Generally, mangan-dominant members are more rich in nature. Many specimens called Tantalite belong to the tapiolite or columbite series. Columbite is the niobium-rich member, and Tantalite is the tantalum-rich member. It is named after its tantalum content, and, together with Columbite, are the rarest minerals containing the rare element tantalum.

The name Tantalite has been defamed by the IMA (International Mineralogical Association), with the more specific designations of Tantalite-(Fe) (Ferrotantalite), and Tantalite-(Mn) (Mangano Tantalite) being used for this minerals. Ferrotantalite is always dark and opaque, while Mangano Tantalite is usually reddish-brown and may manifest transparency. An even rarer member of this series is Tantalite-(Mg), a magnesium-rich member.
